After Lenin's in Tripura, Periyar's statue vandalised in Tamil Nadu

On Wednesday, a bust of Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was vandalised in south Kolkata by seven people.

"We arrested a person who was driving the bulldozer that toppled the statue", Tripura police spokesman Pradip De told AFP.

This comes after incidents of statues being brought down allegedly by BJP workers in Tripura and Tamil Nadu. He also said that the post was published by one of his Facebook page's admins without his permission.

Now the government at the centre taking the matter into consideration taking an action against the people involved in the act. Several BJP leaders including the Tripura governor, Tathagata Roy and the party's north-east in-charge, Ram Madhav, had expressed joy on the demolition of Lenin's statue.

Pointing out at the widespread protests and the public outcry against Raja's comments, Stalin said "none even in their dreams will now think of removing statues of Periyar". "We Tamilians will protect it.I feel that this issue is just to divert attention from Cauvery issue (formation of Cauvery management board)", he said.

The statue of Periyar located at a municipal corporation office in Tirupattur town of Vellore district was targeted by 2 men around 9 PM, as a result of which the glasses and the nose of the statue were damaged. Periyar was a politician as well as a social activist who is popular for initiating the Self-Respect Movement. Of course, BJP condemned this barbaric act, but they forgot that vandalizing anything is against the law.
