Kansas' Big 12 Tournament Opponent Is Set

Well, it's about the best hyperbole to describe the Big 12 basketball season to date - a knock-down, drag-out slugfest featuring all sorts of blows that have Big 12 coaches proudly crowing it as the strongest league in the country.

The reason was simple. The Jayhawks face the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State victor in Thursday's quarterfinals. Certainly the team we played in Stillwater and the team we played here in Oklahoma State, they controlled both games start to finish. Both teams have received votes in the latest AP poll. The Big 12 tournament tips off on Wednesday, March 7, and runs through the championship night on Saturday, March 10. It's tough to beat a team three straight times.

What's that Albert Einstein quote about the definition of insanity? Kansas State doesn't have the same luxury.

"I could tell the longer he stayed down that (KU associate director of sports medicine) Bill (Cowgill) was concerned", Self added. If you had stock in "I told you so" or "playing the game the right way" after he scored 26 on just nine shot attempts in an 85-80 win at home against Kansas on January 23, a signature victory for the Sooners, it would've been a great time to sell. I honestly do think the Wildcats can beat the Jayhawks this time around.

Both teams open play in Friday's quarterfinals, with Auburn facing the Alabama-Texas A&M victor and Tennessee facing the LSU-Mississippi State victor. So tomorrow's game will have no bearing on what the other two games were like.

"I guess we have about 18 hours", Boynton said, "to refresh our bodies and minds". It's who we are. Maybe combined those would be good numbers for the two to shoot for. Azubuike leads in rebounds with 7.1 while Graham tops in assists with 7.2.

"Bedlam is always a game you want to win", guard Kameron McGusty said. And them trying to be might actually hurt the Jayhawks' chances. Mitch Lightfoot will get the larger group of minutes with De Sousa taking Lightfoot's original minutes. You can watch it online on the WatchESPN app. The Shockers narrowly missed snagging the No. 1 seed after falling by one point to Cincinnati on Senior Day in Wichita.

One of Young's primary methods of scoring has been at the free-throw line this season. Nobody had done that to them in 14 years, or 102 series. Clay Young was great in extended, first-half minutes against Syracuse, but I'm not sure he'd have the same success - or opportunity - in relief of De Sousa and Lightfoot if foul trouble plagues those two. Young was listed as top newcomer on 14 ballots, including five that also had him as the top overall player. And, while that might give the Jayhawks some advantages, it would leave them incredibly vulnerable in a couple of other areas. But those silly ones - moving screens, fouling 80 feet from the OSU basket, etc. - must be avoided.

NASA is trying to change that ever so slightly with its Parker Solar Probe which is slated to launch this summer. One would like to have some more detailed measurements of what's going on in the solar wind.

Earlier this week, Lunardi offered his assessment of Big 12 teams with a warning for Baylor: "Could sneak in without a win over West Virginia on Thursday, but don't bet on it".

The postseason fate of the OU men's basketball team is now in the hands of the NCAA Basketball Tournament selection committee.

Texas picked up the win by limiting the amount of shots Iowa State took, mostly in part due to the 12 steals Texas had as a team. Who is this guy? West Virginia comes in having scored at least 79 points in its last three and the Mountaineers have the capability to match Baylor with its own defense. Freshman Trae Young was the lone bright spot for Oklahoma, with 22 points on.333 shooting, but he was unable to lead Oklahoma back as the Sooners lost 71-60 to Oklahoma State.

Dean WadeKansas State's star player had yet another successful week playing against Big 12 opponents.

The crux of the issue was OU's 35 3-pointers. "We'll worry about what next week brings next week".
