The government forces advanced from the east and were only about a mile away from forces on the western side of eastern Ghouta.

For eastern Ghouta's civilians, trapped in underground shelters but deprived of food and water, there is a constant dilemma - whether to seek supplies or stay inside.

"We came because of the intensity of the bombing", said Abu Mohammed, a 32-year-old famer who had left his cows, sheep and farm equipment to join thousands of others fleeing to Douma, further into the rebel enclave.

The Observatory reported airstrikes on Douma and Jisreen just before the 13-truck convoy arrived Friday, following a hourslong lull.

In a letter last month to U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the three main rebel factions in eastern Ghouta said they were committed to making al-Qaida-linked fighters and their families leave within 15 days.

State TV later said that insurgents targeted the Wafideen corridor on Friday afternoon with bullets and mortar shells to prevent people from leaving.
