A police officer in Pomona, Calif., was shot and killed on Friday night and another seriously injured by a gunman who barricaded himself inside an apartment, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The shooter, who has not been identified, remains barricaded inside the apartment and the scene is active, the captain said.

He added the second officer wounded was in stable condition. That policeman was being escorted by law enforcement personnel and firefighter to the Los Angeles County coroner's office as the barricade situation continued at the scene.

The apartment complex was evacuated except for the suspect and the scene is secure, Bergner said. The deceased officer was identified Saturday afternoon as Gregory Casillas, 25, The Daily Bulletin reported. He noted that he could not release further details because the investigation is ongoing.

LA County Fire confirmed to CBS2/KCAL9 that an officer was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

A second officer had also been shot, Pomona Police Chief Michael Oliveri said in a tweet.

The shooting happened about 9 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Palomares Street, near Fernleaf Avenue, where officers responded to a report of a barricaded suspect at an apartment complex. Crisis negotiators were speaking with the suspect throughout the night, he said.

Casillas is the 16th law enforcement officer who was shot and killed this year, according to The Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks such deaths. Bergner says the other officer was undergoing surgery but was expected to recover. Pomona is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Los Angeles in Los Angeles County.
