NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND - MARCH 10: Mauricio Pellegrino, Manager of Southampton looks dejected after the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Southampton at St. James Park on March 10, 2018 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The main aim will be turning around the displays of a group of players who many feel have had too much of a say in how the club is run during the short reigns of Claude Puel and Pellegrino over the past 18 months. He had previously been at Alaves.

The Southampton vice-chairman, Les Reed, would have preferred to wait until the end of the season before making a change but the 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday represented the tipping point, particularly as Pellegrino later questioned whether the players were giving their all.

However, last night the Southampton board finally made a stand, sacking the man who has won just five of his 30 league games in charge.

The team, who are now one point outside the relegation zone, have taken on the form of their coach in recent months in that they've become nearly entirely anonymous, with no recognisable approach or identity to speak of.

Another win in three weeks time against Huddersfield and I think the bookies would see NUFC as totally safe, though Rafa's players would still have to then add the necessary extra few points afterwards to back up that opinion.

Former Watford boss Marco Silva has been linked with the role, but is reported to be considering other offers, while ex-West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has expressed an interest in the job as he seeks a return to management.

Only three of their remaining eight league games are at home - and two of those are against Chelsea and Manchester City.

Saints will be hoping to appoint Pellegrino's successor quickly, with an FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan looming on Sunday.
