Russian authorities say that five people including one child have died in a fire that broke out in a multi-story shopping centre in the Siberian city of Kemerovo.

The shopping mall, which opened in 2013, has a cinema, petting zoo, children's center and bowling, Tass reported.

Later, the death toll was confirmed by the Russian Investigative Committee.

The country's Investigative Committee, which investigates high-profile crimes and reports directly to President Vladimir Putin, said more than 100 people had been evacuated from the busy centre, which contains cinemas, restaurants and shops.

The blaze started on the fourth floor of the Winter Cherry building in the city of Kemerovo, according to Russia's Sputnik news site.

"The fate of 17 people who disappeared during the fire remains unknown", said the agency's interlocutor.

"Where to look for people?"

The fire was brought under control around 1730 GMT, local emergency officials said, adding that some 300 firefighters and rescue personnel had been sent to the scene.
