Atlanta-Hartsfield-Jackson scored the top honors with over 103 million passengers last year, followed by Beijing and Dubai's airports, which had almost 184 million passengers combined that year, according to the trade council.

Worldwide passenger traffic increased 6.6% in 2017, while global passenger numbers were up 8.4%.

Delhi was also ranked first in Airport Service Quality for airports with above 40 million passengers per annum along with Mumbai airport, stated the ACI.

Once again, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport is the busiest in the world, having welcomed nearly 104 million passengers previous year. Worldwide traffic increased by +5.2% across the top 20 airports past year."The surge in cargo volumes and passenger numbers across numerous world's airports is testament to heightened business and consumer confidence, at least in the short term", said ACI World Director General Angela Gittens.

New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport broke into the top 20 last year, coming in at 16th place after being ranked 22nd in 2016, and the airfield in Guangzhou, China, rose two places from 15th to 13th last year, according to the Airport Council International rankings.

The runner up was Beijing Capital International Airport, with 96 million passengers, followed by Dubai International, with 88 million. This represents a 21% share of projected global passenger traffic forecasted by 2040.
