SHANGHAI (AP) - Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo yanked off his right shoe, poured champagne into it as he stood on the podium, and then drank up to his unlikely victory in Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix.

Not one of those race Sunday's we are normally accustomed to seeing the Briton light up. This was to prove significant, as when Vettel stopped on lap 21, Bottas had done enough to edge ahead of the German, his team congratulating him on a job well done and imploring him to now stay ahead of the Ferrari.

Ricciardo dived in for new soft tyres with 23 laps remaining, while erstwhile leader Bottas and his main challenger Sebastian Vettel stayed out on mediums having passed the pitlane entry before the safety auto was deployed. It resulted in Gasly punting the right-rear section of his teammate's vehicle, which resulted in many bits of sharp carbon-fibre being strewn all over that section of the race track.

Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull had been relatively closely matched but the top six were all spaced out when the two Toro Rossos collided to leave debris on the track and lead the Safety Car to be deployed. And that is where the race turned on its head. It took a few minutes for the marshals to put out a safety vehicle period, in which both Ricciardo and his Red Bull teammate, Max Verstappen, dived into the pits at the same time.

But the race turned due to a mid-race safety vehicle.

The 20-year-old Dutchman hunted down third placed Lewis Hamilton and on lap 39 made a very risky attempt to pass Hamilton from the outside in a fast, left-handed turn. Verstappen wound up fifth. "The passing moves, there was one more at turn 14 where he came from so far back, I think it was on Lewis (Hamilton), and he just got the job done".

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a decree on Saturday to extend a curfew already in place in a new declaration. Egypt first imposed the current state of emergency in April 2017 after two church bombings killed at least 45 people.

The second Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton finished fourth after a hard race, with the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettelonly eighth after a mid-race collision with Max Verstappen's Red Bull.

Verstappen was handed a ten-second post-race time penalty but all eyes were on the charging Ricciardo.

However then Verstappen got over-eager again and when he tried to get ahead of Vettel he touched and they both spun, allowing Raikkonen and Hamilton to get ahead. Verstappen's 10-second penalty dropped him behind Hamilton in the classification, however.

Vettel heading for a podium position in third on lap 43 when Verstappen slammed into his side on turn 14, sending them both spinning and several places down the race order. He finished in fifth place, ahead of Niko Hulkenberg's Renault.

Vettel's struggles saw him pick up just four points compared to 12 for Hamilton, seeing the championship lead cut to nine points, while Mercedes also moves one point clear of Ferrari in the constructors' championship.

"I am thankful for the way he drives because it meant we did not lose too many points", Hamilton, 33, said with a wry smile.
