Facebook fires engineer accused of using data access to stalk women online

This also comes at a time when Facebook is facing severe backlash on data privacy after it revealed that Cambridge Analytica got hold of personal data of over 87 million Facebook users.

Facebook has fired an employee accused of abusing their position to stalk women online, and a new report alleges several former social network staffers suffered the same fate under similar circumstances.

The breach was first uncovered by a cybersecurity consultant, Jackie Stokes, who was sent the weird exchange between the alleged engineer and a woman he was supposedly speaking to on Tinder.

Stokes said she learned that "a security engineer now employed at Facebook is likely using privileged access to stalk women online".

The latest controversy to hit the US social networking giant first emerged on Monday, after a screenshot was posted online which purported to show the individual boasting of being a "professional stalker".

Mere hours after this particular piece of information was given to Facebook, the social network looked into the situation and made a decision to terminate the employment of the engineer.

"We are investigating this as a matter of urgency", Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos told NBC News on Wednesday. He said: "It's important that people's information is kept secure and private when they use Facebook".

At this point, the specifics as to how the abuse was actually taking place have not been revealed, which is concerning.

Facebook has fired an employee who used special access to the site to stalk women. Those who don't want to be stalked might want to make some changes to prevent similar incidents in the future. "I have Tinder logs", Stokes wrote, adding the person's identity was confirmed using information from Tinder and LinkedIn.

Responding to news that there had been a termination, Stokes said, "I do not believe that Facebook would have had a knee-jerk reaction and fired an employee without cause".
