House explodes while police on scene for barricaded person

The house reportedly went on fire after a possible explosion.

Police responded to the home because a man was barricaded inside. Ahead of the house explosion there were reports of gunshots.

A large police presence had been in the area involving a barricaded person, WFSB-TV reports.

The blaze was still burning early Thursday, said fire officials, adding that power was out to the area and a local firehouse had been set up as a "refuge" for affected residents.

Residents posted messages on the North Haven Police's Facebook page that the explosion shook their homes.

State police SWAT teams and explosive specialists have been called in to assist North Haven police at the scene of a house explosion.

Connecticut State Police took over the investigation because it happened on a state road.

A barn behind a house in CT exploded Wednesday night while police and a SWAT team were negotiating with a man who had taken his wife and family hostage, leaving at least six officers injured, state police and a town official said.

It wasn't immediately clear if anyone was injured in the explosion Wednesday night in North Haven, but people at the scene were being placed into ambulances. Other explosions could be heard as the fire continued to burn.
