Entire nation grateful to nursing community: President

Nizamiye Hospital Abuja on Saturday celebrated the International Nurses Day in Abuja to mark the invaluable contributions of nurses in Nigeria and all over the world.

He said, the nursing community serves the people with devotion and commitment and the entire nation is grateful for this.

New Delhi, May 12 (MExN): President Ram Nath Kovind today, on International Nurses Day, lauded the dedication and contribution of nurses to the nation and stressed on the need for strengthening the nursing sector.

Further, the Governor also called upon the citizens of Nagaland to thank all nurses for the dedicated and selfless services they render day in and day out to provide good health and a healthy life to everyone.

Longkumer reminded the nurses that they were trained and educated to maintain the health and wellness of the individual and community.

Given every year on May 12, a total of 35 awards - 20 for Nurses, 12 for Auxiliary Nurse Mid-wives and 3 for Lady Health Visitors are awarded to outstanding Nursing Personnel.

This year the theme of the day is - Nurses A Voice to Lead - Health is a Human right. He said that nurses were the backbone of the healthcare system.

The program was attended by all the nurses from district hospital, primary health centres and sub centres, NHM staff and media officer.

On the first day of its annual congress, Janet Davies, chief executive and general secretary of the RCN, is expected to say: "The reason we have so many vacancies is because of short-sighted cost-cutting in past years, and ineffective workforce planning driven by finance and not the needs of patients".

Union Health Minister J P Nadda and Union Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey gave away the awards to the nurses at the Florence Nightingale awards ceremony.

A special prayer for the nurses was offered by Dr. Ngopelo while Vepothilu and friends presented a song "We are women". The programme concluded with singing the nurses anthem and a mass prayer.
