Senate: We'll allow Senator Omo-Agege to resume

As early as 9:30 a.m., journalists stationed their cameras around the entrance of the Senate chamber to catch on tape the resumption of the senator.

Omo-Agege spoke at the APC National secretariat citing his legal victory.

Omo-Agege, a lawyer had challenged his suspension in court.

Same day he was suspended, Omo-Agege had reportedly told Punch that he would continue to work as a senator.

The Senate on Monday said it will allow Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to resume in his office in accordance with a court ruling.

The incident which occurred while plenary was ongoing in the chambers was linked to Omo-Agege, who defied the suspension order on him and attended the proceedings, accompanied by some unusual fellows into the chamber.

Asked if he would drag the security agencies to court, Omo-Agege said, "I know what to do, and they know that I know what to do".

Last week Thursday, a Federal High Court in Abuja nullified the suspension of Omo-Agege for 90 days by his colleagues and declared it illegal.

"We have equally filed an appeal against the judgement of the court and a motion for stay of execution of the judgement at the court of appeal".

While the Senate said it will appeal the judgement, the suspended Senator had vowed to resume lawmaking duties at the upper chamber of the National Assembly on Tuesday as he affirmed that the Senate has not been granted stay of execution on the judgement.

The statement signed by the spokesman of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the Senate leadership had been briefed by its lawyers. But he also advised the lawmakers to withdraw their appeal of the judgement.

Okowa made the pledge at the weekend in Asaba, the state capital during a meeting with stakeholders in the Delta North Senatorial district.The assurance became necessary following allegations that the PDP imposed some candidates and rigged the contest in favour of some candidates.The Chairman of PDP in the district, Mr. Moses Iduh commended the governor for the successful conduct of the Ekiti PDP governorship primaries.

"Having regard to the settled position of the law as expoused by our courts in not less than five cases wherein the suspension of legislators by legislative houses was annulled and set aside the Senate should withdraw the appeal filed against the judgment of the Federal High Court in the case of Senator Omo-Agege". Mr Falana further called on the Executive branch of the federal government "to emulate the good example of the Senate by complying with all valid and subsisting judgments of all courts in Nigeria".
