1 killed, 2 injured in Aliso Viejo office building explosion

One person was killed and at least three others were injured Tuesday in an explosion and fire at a medical building in Aliso Viejo, prompting a large-scale response by fire and sheriff's officials working to determine what caused the blast.

The explosion happened on the first floor of the two-story office building at 5 Mareblu said Orange County Fire Authority, KTLA reports.

The powerful blast blew out almost the entire bottom floor, officials said.

"The investigation is ongoing", Braun told Xinhua by telephone.

U.S. officials confirmed it had responded to an explosion.

Orange County officials sought assistance in the investigation from federal agencies, including the FBI, ATF and Homeland Security. Tony Bommarito was quoted as saying by City News Service that it is rare for such gas-fueled blast to occur in a commercial building. Children at a day care across the street from the building were evacuated.

Fire and sheriff's officials said the building appeared to be undergoing some type of renovation.

Little children holding hands and others being pushed in rolling cribs were led by firefighters to a Target parking lot to be united with parents.

"Then everyone started running out of buildings everywhere with looks on their faces of just horror", the woman said. It was not immediately clear what prompted that call.
