It is expected Bairstow will continue to keep and Buttler will be deployed as a batsman in the match at Lord's starting next Thursday.

Jos Buttler will be given a surprise return to the England Test team on Tuesday when Ed Smith, their new head selector, announces his squad for the first Test against Pakistan.

"The first thing we talked about as a selection panel - and it coincided with one of my first trains of thought coming into the job - was how could we..."

Buttler is now set to play as a specialist number seven batsman in an England order where captain Joe Root will move up to three and Bairstow five against a Pakistan side who beat Test newcomers Ireland by five wickets at Malahide on Monday.

Somerset spinner Dom Bess has been called up for the first time, after his team mate Jack Leach broke his left thumb in the nets last week.

Vince, a shock recall for England´s eventual 4-0 Ashes series loss in Australia, made 83 in the first innings at Brisbane in November and ended his southern hemisphere tour with 76 against New Zealand in Christchurch last month.

Bess, 20, has an average of 22.49 from 16 first-class games.

"Dom Bess has made an excellent start to his first-class career".

But he starred for MCC in the Champion County match against Essex in March where he took eight wickets in the match and scored a century in a victory over the county Champions in Barbados.

"With Jack Leach missing out due to injury, the selection panel wanted to invest opportunity in a young spin bowler".

"Jos Buttler is an outstanding talent, who is already a central part of England's white ball teams", said Smith in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement. We felt that a player of his unique gifts - as a destructive batsman, fantastic competitive presence, dynamic athlete, someone who has leadership skills innate in him, who is playing with such confidence and flair - this was the right time'. "Dom's strong form, character and all-round abilities presented a compelling case for selection".
