Guatemala Opens Embassy in Jerusalem

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the embassy's opening on Wednesday in an office complex in west Jerusalem.

US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, enraging Palestinians, has left several Latin American countries pondering whether to follow suit.

"You are always among the first, always among the first.We remember our friends, and Guatemala is our friend - then and now", Netanyahu went on, recalling that Guatemala was the second nation, after the U.S., to recognize Israel in May 1948.

Al Momani expalined that the decision of the government of Guatemala to transfer its embassy to occupied Jerusalem is a flagrant violation of global law and United Nations resolutions, especially the recent General Assembly resolution, which rejected US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Morales said his country, the United States and Israel "share friendship, courage and loyalty" at the opening. After the U.S.it is only the country that has relocated its embassy to the occupied city.

The ministry said the ambassadors' presence at the inauguration ceremony was a "major violation of global law and of numerous United Nations resolutions".

The Israeli army and police deployed thousands of officers in Jerusalem and along the Gaza Strip for the US embassy relocation ceremony.
