Riau Police HQ attacked by four men

One policeman was killed and 4 militants were shot dead in an attack on a police headquarters in Riau province of Indonesia on Wednesday, police said.

The group slammed a minivan into a gate at the station in Riau on Sumatra island and then attacked officers with samurai swords, according to the country's national police.

Television images showed what was reportedly the bodies of four suspects lying on the ground.

Earlier this month, six officers at a high-security detention center on the outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, were killed by Islamic militant inmates who took control of part of the prison and held hostages until being overwhelmed by police. "One of them is being checked by a bomb squad", he was quoted by Kompas TV as saying, referring to a suspected bomb strapped to the militant's body. In the ensuing chaos, at least two suspected terrorists, both wearing balaclavas, were spotted getting out of the vehicle wielding sharp weapons and attacking police officers.

A number of terrorist attacks have occurred in Indonesia in recent days targeting churches and police stations.

Five people died in the attack, including the four suspected militants and a police officer who was hit by the auto.

State news agency Antara said two journalists who had been at the police headquarters were also hurt in the attack. At least 26 people died in a series of terror attacks in Surabaya on Sunday and Monday, including 13 militants and their children. Police updates have stated that there were five attackers, and that four were shot dead at the scene.
