There are many constants in the world of videogames and one such constant is that Shenmue 3 will only ever be as real as its delays.

Shenmue fans, mark your calendars... again.

Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has issued a statement on the ordeal: "To all of our backers, we are very sorry for the delay".

The statement said the delay will allow developers extra time to "polish the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe".

In a not-all-that-surprising move, Shenmue III publisher Deep Silver has announced that the game will be delayed until an unspecified date sometime in 2019. Instead it'll focus on a 2019 release to give Suzuki and his team the extra time to make sure it's up to fans' standards.

The game's Kickstarter campaign raised over $6 million United States with over 69,000 backers in July of 2015 and has been in development ever since.

A release date wasn't given and likely won't be revealed until the beginning of next year. "We can not thank you enough for your enduring support". The scope of these games often extend far beyond what was initially imagined, especially when they smash their goals and in the case of Shenmue III, smash Kickstarter records. If you can wait a decade, you can wait for Shenmue 3 to be properly polished. It's been a long, long time since Shenmue 2 was released for the Sega Dreamcast, of all things, which means the wait for Shenmue 3 is quickly closing in on a whopping 17 years.
