More than 300 people were killed in Tennessee auto crashes a year ago while not wearing a seat belt. "But it's more than that. If the enforcement crackdown wakes people up to the dangers of unrestrained driving and gets them to buckle up, we'll consider it a success". "I am frequently asked why we warn everyone in advance - the bottom line is not issuing citations, but saving lives", Sgt. Campbell said.

Since Washington passed the primary seat belt law in 2002, the unrestrained fatality rate decreased from accounting for 64 percent of traffic deaths to 18 percent of traffic deaths.

"Seat belts are the first line of defense in the event of a motor vehicle crash and buckling up is the number one thing drivers and passengers can do to keep themselves safe in a auto", Major James B. Basinger, director, Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Patrol, said in a release. If a driver is stopped by an officer and occupants aren't wearing the proper restraints the seatbelt laws will be strictly enforced. "Help us spread this life-saving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction". Motor vehicle occupants who buckle up increase their chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent.
