Apple may be closing in on a location for a new campus it announced earlier this year - and it could end up being located close to Duke University, where CEO Tim Cook and several other top Apple executives went to school. Apple may have had its heart set on North Carolina the entire time, according to Wednesday's report.

The location of Apple's proposed new headquarter has been speculated upon, with North Carolina and Northern Virginia emerging as the two most likely candidates.

Since the last few months, Apple has been busy exploring various states and regions in a bid to find space for its new campus.

Apple's decision to open a new headquarters in North Carolina is reportedly a "done deal" as soon as a bill is passed approving a series of incentives for Apple.

Apple is keeping the plot of land in Research Triangle Park in mind. They put the investment between $1.5 billion and $2 billion. The legislation announced Thursday would also lengthen the maximum terms for the transformative projects program as well as the state's Job Development Investment Grant program to as much as 40 years total. Cook earned his MBA from Duke University in 1988 and is quite familiar with the area. "We do not share information about economic development projects before they are final, but I will be happy to share more information if or when a decision is made", spokesman Jamal Little said in an email.

There is certainly something about Northern Virginia that is catching the eye of tech companies, as the area is also among the 20 finalists for the location of the second Amazon headquarters. The new campus will hold call center workers at first.

Italian Populists Seal Coalition Pact in Challenge to EU Elites
On Wednesday, officials representing president Sergio Mattarella said he would only scrutinise the final version of the contract. Italy's inconclusive election looks to have been the midwife for a radical, populist coalition that could shake up Europe .

"We're not doing a beauty-contest kind of thing", Cook told Recode's Kara Swisher in a recent interview.

North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore did not respond to a request for comment.

Apple's search for a new campus location is being conducted in secret.

There are reports that Apple is actually really close to announcing a deal that it will be bringing up to 10,000 new jobs to North Carolina.

The thought of Apple setting up a new, large shop all the way across the country from its Cupertino headquarters is not so far-fetched an idea.
