Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara yesterday said that there were millions of Nigerians spread across the globe who are corrupt-free apart from President Muhammadu Buhari.

"Fighting corruption is key not only to free our society from immorality but from poverty and underdevelopment", Magu said.

"He forgot that he staged a coup d'etat in 1983, toppled a democratically-elected govt. and stole the Presidency and entire treasury".

Since assumption of office by president Buhari in 2015, the war against corruption has received cardinal attention.

"Debunking claims of persecution, Buhari said "(We) never intended, and we are not engaged in witch-hunts, but we are determined within the laws to call people to account".

"Very specific, I said a certain sum of money was taken in a night plane to the head of state of a neighbouring country and if you can just help us recover that sum, it may be 50 per cent, given the resistance, it may be about 25 per cent and that way, it will help us not only to continue the war that existed but establish a principle that corruption is not just in one country".

"This year alone we have secured 89 convictions and within the last 2 years 418 convictions and this is with over N500billion well remitted to the federal government and in accordance with the laws".

"It has become the norm".

"That is why we must fight this attitude and encourage Nigerians to change their attitudes and perspectives", Buhari said.

"The goal of this Administration is to ensure the protection of public trust, and the anti-corruption war is at its centre".

Meanwhile, the Commonwealth secretary-general, Patricia Scotland, has revealed that Nigeria recovered over $3 billion in one year through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). There are millions of Nigerians who are not corrupt, " he said.

Dogara, who also expressed concern on the issue of Nigeria being labeled as "fantastically corrupt" said, "not all public officers are corrupt". He, however, expressed satisfaction "that Mr. President, by this singular effort, has shown that he is putting money where his mouth is".

Nation's economy improving In another development, President Buhari said the nation's economy "is steadily improving", and urged Nigerians to remain optimistic as the "future of the country is bright". "When I was appointed as acting chairman EFCC, I have always had the mind to bring this project to completion".

President Buhari just ended his two-day working visit to Jigawa State. I am happy to say that it's through the support of the National Assembly that funds were put together to complete this institution and I can assure you of our continued commitment to supporting the fight against corruption. Kano has always been the President's base.

According to him, "If they are honest with themselves, they know that President Buhari will win those states, with or without them".
