According to local media, the man was hours late for his original flight and became aggressive towards Jetstar staff. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the right plane.

It turns out that the man's air rage was woefully misdirected - the plane he launched his assault on was actually headed to Sydney.

The man was eventually restrained by baggage handlers and arrested by the police.

One witness, Susannah Murray, told Nine News how she saw the man "physically fighting with the staff".

A man who ran onto the tarmac at Melbourne Airport and tried to storm a plane because he was running late has been charged with assaulting a Jetstar employee.

Witnesses say he then smoked a cigarette inside the airport - an act which is forbidden - before pushing over a computer, assaulting the Jetstar staff, and then making a break for the gate before running out to the tarmac.

"A man was arrested as a result and is now assisting police with inquiries", she said.

The massive security breach happened today after the man missed his flight and then tried to charge onto a plane waiting to take off.

"The federal police showed up five minutes later and walked him out".

Australian Federal Police then showed up and escorted the man back through the gate.

Jetstar confirmed that several crew members had been injured and said two flights were delayed by the incident.

AFP officers have the man into custody, but Channel 9 says charges are yet to be laid.

"This behavior is unacceptable and we have placed an immediate ban on this passenger traveling on all Jetstar and Qantas flights", the spokesperson said.
