McCormick County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene and shocked to find there was, in fact, a kangaroo.

Curtis Holt spotted the kangaroo while driving and shot video of the animal hopping around near the highway. A Facebook post by McCormick County Emergency Services was shared almost 500 times as of noon on Tuesday.

Stearns, who's been in law enforcement for more than 30 years, said the early morning call to dispatch was a first for him. "Where the animal was seen is very, very close to where it belongs, so it's not like he was hopping at large around McCormick County". "A kangaroo, somewhere in Africa but not around here", Yeldell told FOX 54's Jasmine Anderson.

"It sounds like he had someone working with the animal when it escaped", explained Sheriff Clark.

The kangaroo was caught and transported safely back to its home, where it was reunited with its owner.

It is legal to have a kangaroo as a pet in SC, and Gray sister station WRDW reports the owner of the kangaroo has all the proper licensing to keep the animal.
