West Norfolk beaches given Seaside Awards

Weymouth's popular central beach has once again been recognised with an global Blue Flag Award.

Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, Coun Amy Wilson added: "The awards are national recognition of our bathing beaches as being among the best in the country, and are testament to the hard work of everyone involved in helping them stay that way".

The Seaside Award recognises beaches that meet the highest standards of cleanliness and facilities while the Blue Flag is handed to only the best beaches in the world.

"Year of the Sea 2018 is the ideal time to celebrate the success of the past 30 years of the Blue Flag programme - and gives us a fantastic opportunity to make the most the fact that we have more Blue Flag beaches per mile than anywhere else in Britain".

This years biggest victor of Coast Awards includes Pembrokeshire which won 56 awards.

One in four children has never swum in the sea in Britain and nearly one in five have never set foot on a British beach, research has revealed.

Keep Britain Tidy's Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: "Blue Flag leads the fight back for the Blue Planet".

The news comes as research from Keep Britain Tidy reveals that 27 per cent of children have never been swimming in the sea in this country.

Roker and Seaburn are listed among 65 beaches in the United Kingdom to receive the worldwide Blue Flag award and two of 125 to secure the Seaside Award.

They include Blue Flags, Green Coast Awards and Seaside Awards. "Hopefully next year we'll see an even greater number joining us as we drive up standards across the board".

"Our research shows that almost two thirds (65%) of parents would prefer to visit beaches with Blue Flag or Seaside Award status, so growing the number of beaches with an award is vital to encourage more families to visit our lovely coastline".
