Russian diplomat slams Pompeo's demands addressed to Iran as nonsense

John Bolton, the USA national security advisor, has been a supporter of the MKO, which the Iranian government sees as a terrorist group.

Iran's uprising undeniably showcased unprecedented public expressions of desire for regime change.

The current Iranian regime is unlikely to accede, which means that pressure from sanctions will keep mounting, which in turn may lead to street protests and wider unrest.

"This sting of sanctions will be painful if the regime does not change its course from the unacceptable and unproductive path it has chosen to one that rejoins the league of nations".

Rouhani scoffed at the demands from Pompeo, a former congressman who was previously Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director. "And even if European companies make their own minds up and decide to end contracts with Iran, you still have the Russians and the Chinese out there who can do quite well in terms of buying Iranian oil". "And they want the countries that oppose them to have nothing", he added, indignantly.

The Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif said the United States was a prisoner of its "failed policies" and would suffer the consequences European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said Pompeo had not demonstrated how abandoning the deal made the region safer from nuclear proliferation.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced the Washington withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or the Iran nuclear deal which limited the country's uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief.

In a statement published on May 13, the head of Iran's hardline Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, urged Rouhani to apologise to the nation for signing the nuclear deal.

Meanwhile, Iran has told European powers to step up and salvage its global nuclear deal.

In his speech, Pompeo argued that Iran had advanced its march across the Middle East precisely because of the nuclear deal, which saw the West lifting sanctions on Tehran in return for Iran limiting its nuclear program.

Pompeo said that that if Iran meets the Trump administration's demands the USA would end the sanctions, give Iran access to advanced technology and re-establish diplomatic and commercial relations. Four dissenting liberal justices said the decision will hit low-wage, vulnerable workers especially hard.

"The era of such statements has evolved and the Iranian people have heard these statements hundreds of times, and no longer pays attention", Rouhani added.

But then the Trump administration has repeatedly shown it will hurt both friend and foe, and ignore the larger geopolitical picture, in pursuit of disruptive policies. "It aspires to achieve nuclear weapons by various means", Netanyahu said.

European allies heard how Pompeo expects their support for the new United States plan - but he offered nothing in return, and threatened economic fallout for anyone still dealing with the Islamic Republic.

The US was able to prod countries-most importantly China-into cutting off economic activity, contributing to North Korea's new willingness to consider concessions. "They know where we stand".

The re-establishment of USA sanctions will force European companies to choose between investing in Iran or trading with the United States.

In reality, there is no choice - European companies can not afford to forsake the United States market.

Pompeo vowed Trump's approach would ensure Iran would never develop a nuclear weapon.

Unless such a treaty can be reached, Pompeo warned that Iran would face tough sanctions that would leave it "battling to keep its economy alive".

The administration billed the speech, Pompeo's first policy address as secretary of state, as an articulation of Trump's new strategy toward Iran less than a month after he ignored the pleas of USA allies and withdrew from the nuclear accord.
