Now such is the belief that Rowett is the man for Stoke, Bookmakers have closed the market on the next boss.

The Potters have been on the lookout for a new manager since the departure of Paul Lambert, but it seems that Rowett is set to join the club in the next few days.

Derby said in a statement on their website: "Derby County Football Club can confirm that Gary Rowett has asked for permission to speak with Stoke City regarding the vacant manager's position at the bet365 Stadium".

Derby County, where Rowett now coaches, have confirmed that an official approach from Stoke was made and that the manager asked permission to speak to the newly-demoted Championship outfit.

Gary Rowett Sacked by Birmingham

But while the Stoke job would no doubt be tempting for Rowett, we think he'll be keen to conjure up another promotion push with current club Derby.

Stoke are to pay the £1.8m compensation figure in Rowett's contract at Derby County and have agreed terms with the manager.

And a move to Stoke could appeal to the former Birmingham City and Burton Albion boss, whose budget is expected to be cut next season.

The 43-year-old is highly rated in the game, having led Derby to the playoffs this past season.
