"I've known Thomas since 1996 when he beat me for "Rookie of the Year" so we've had very close careers over the years".

Westwood is a seven-time victor as a player in the contest against the US.

'You only need to look at the record books to see that their Ryder Cup pedigree speaks for itself.

45-year-old Westwood - a member of each team dating back to 1997 - is the most tenured member, while three-time major champion Harrington was a vice-captain under Darren Clarke at Hazeltine in 2016. "We know the U.S. team are very strong and they hold the major championships but winning a major individually is very different from playing in Ryder Cup", said the former world No 1.

Harrington boasts six appearances, McDowell four, and Donald has also taken to the links for Team Europe four times. He gained the winning point at Celtic Manor in 2010, and helped Europe win in 2012 and 2014 when he made his fourth appearance.

"There's four games on the golf course the first two days, morning and afternoon, and it's nice to have eyes and ears with each match", said Bjorn.

"After being vice-captain twice I realised how much work is behind the scenes in supporting the captain", he said.

While Neymar continues recovery, Costa picks up injury
Eleven players took part in Brazil's fitness training, including Neymar , Costa and right-back Fagner , who is also returning from injury.

For Harrington, it's a role he's held before and he hopes that experience will count come September.

This year's event takes place at Paris' Le Golf National from 28 September. "We know they have a very strong team". They have all experienced the feeling of success in the Ryder Cup.

"This is a conversation we've had in this group and every player that sits at this table is capable of making the team", Bjorn said. Having been fortunate to play in the last ten matches, I am actually looking forward to contributing to Europe's cause in a slightly different way at this year's contest.

Bjorn announced the four new vice captains today in a press conference at Wentworth ahead of this week's BMW PGA Championship. I'm focusing on can I see us winning with the players that we have?

Europe is adding a wealth of Ryder Cup experience for the team room with four more assistants to captain Thomas Bjorn.

The 2018 Ryder Cup itself, the 42nd staging of the contest, will be played at Le Golf National, France, from September 28-30, where Europe will try to regain the trophy following defeat at Hazeltine National previous year, with the aiming of extending an impressive winning record on home soil which stretches back to Valderrama in 1997.
