Meghan's home state of California is represented prominently in the coat of arms, an image of which was released today by Kensington Palace.

The songbird stood to the right of the coat of arms is called a "Supporter" - it has open wings to symbolise the power of communication.

Beneath the shield on the grass are golden poppies which are California's state flower.

Garter King of Arms Thomas Woodcock, who is based at the College of Arms said: "The Duchess of Sussex took a great interest in the design".

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (formerly Meghan Markle) worked with the College of Arms to create a design that was "both personal and representative, "according to the palace".

The coat of arms was approved by Queen Elizabeth, and includes several nods to Meg's California upbringing.

The lion supporting the shield relates to her husband, the Duke of Sussex, and dates back to the House of Stuart's ascent to the throne in 1603. Her Coronet features two crosses patée, four fleurs-de-lys and two strawberry leaves. Traditionally, the coat of arms is gifted to the father of the bride before the wedding - for example, Kate Middleton's father received their family's coat of arms about a week before her wedding.

The arms of a married woman are shown with those of her husband and the technical term is that they are impaled, meaning placed side by side in the same shield. People said the design will likely be unveiled in a couple years.

"Good heraldic design is almost always simple and the Arms of The Duchess of Sussex stand well beside the historic beauty of the quartered British Royal Arms", Woodcock said.

Just as her presence brought American emblems to the vellum of the Instrument of Consent before her marriage, the coat of arms is infused with transatlantic symbols.
