Belize's ally, Taiwan, intimidated by Chinese aircraft bombers

China and Burkina Faso signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations on Saturday, days after the west African nation cut ties with Taiwan in yet another victory for Beijing in its campaign to isolate the island.

This month, Taipei blamed Beijing for blocking Taiwan's participation in an annual United Nations health meeting for the second year running-an exclusion China said it welcomed.

The double loss leaves Taiwan with diplomatic recognition from just 18 states, raising concerns that China is accelerating efforts to isolate the island from the global community-just as U.S. President Donald Trump shows renewed interest in shoring up ties with the island.

Wang said in a speech after the signing that Burkina Faso acknowledged in the communique that "there is only one China in the world".

Burkina Faso had terminated relations with Taipei first in 1973 but restored them in 1994. China stopped wooing Taiwan's diplomatic partners during the eight-year Kuomintang administration under President Ma Ying-jeou, which ended in 2016 when Taiwan elected Ms. Tsai as president.
