The Metro are citing a report from Sport that claims Arsenal and Chelsea have now approached Barcelona to discuss Cillessen's availability this summer and were told they'd have to meet his £52m release clause.

Chelsea and Arsenal have reportedly both made "direct" moves for Barcelona goalkeeper and Liverpool transfer target Jasper Cillessen.

Cillessen signed for Barcelona in 2016 but has been largely consigned to a place on the bench due to the consistency of Germany's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the 29-year-old in recent days as their search for a new goalkeeper continues.

Arsenal on the other hand, have an ageing first-choice keeper in Petr Cech, who has become prone to blunders of late. Rico started out during Unai Emery's tenure at Sevilla as the number two goalkeeper, but took over starting duties in 2014-15.

Jurgen Klopp is in the market for a new number one as Simon Mignolet is set to leave Anfield after falling out of favour while the future of Loris Karius is in doubt following his horror show against Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old has a £22 million release clause in his contract.

We have been on the lookout for a quality keeper as Thibaut Courtois has not yet signed a new deal.

Barcelona are ready to stand firm, however, and are not prepared to sell the Netherlands worldwide for anything lower than his €60 million (£52m) release clause. Like their local London rivals Arsenal, Chelsea too has seen Cillessen as an ideal man to stand in between the sticks for next season.
