Compare Apple's presentation to Google's recent developer conference, where the Google Assistant, which Google calls its voice-activated computing tool, stole the show.

ARKit, which was first launched in 2017, now has improved face tracking, 3D, object detection and a more persistent experience.

The most eye-catching of those is probably its refined support for Augment Reality, allowing users to interact with persistent virtual objects that can be seen through its phones and tablets. It is introducing "Screen Time", an app that will give users a weekly report about how much time they spend on their devices and on specific apps, as well as new ways to curb the habit.

Developers are already playing around with how the functionality could work in the iOS 12 beta release, though without official Spotify app support things are still a bit rough.

Apple is adding a "For You" tab to the Photos app that will show memories, as well as produce sharing suggestions.

This new tab combines Memories and iCloud Shared Albums so you can have all your favourites in one place. And then you'll need to stump up $149. The aim is to bring AR to apps like Messages, Safari, Mail, Files and News, and deliver powerful graphics and animation features.

On the surface, the two companies are taking very similar approaches with the tools they're offering to present information to users.

Apple is also implementing a new feature called stacks on the desktop. The initiative was launched after fears of smartphone addiction hit the headlines and several analysts and experts build pressure on the mobile manufacturer to take action.

Notifications, on the other hand, will be more interactive - for example, they will let you respond to reservations or pay for rides directly from within the Watch version of the app. Users can also block app notifications from showing up on the home screen not only based on time of day, which they can do now, but by location, such as when visiting the playground with their kids.

There is also a new "Do Not Disturb during Bedtime" mode to help people get a better night's sleep by dimming the display and hiding all notifications on the lock screen until prompted in the morning.

A new grouped notifications tool will categorize app notifications by apps and topics. Craig Federighi, senior VP of software engineering at Apple, told a standing-room pack with almost 6,000 software developers at the Worldwide Developers Conference of Apple in Silicon Valley, stated that as the "like" buttons and the "comment" fields on Facebook can be utilized to track the subscriber, so this year Apple is shutting those down.

Apple's annual developer conference kicked off this week and during the opening keynote Apple executives took turns walking developers through new features coming to the company's hardware products later this year.

In iOS 12, apps will load up to 40% faster, the keyboard will come up 50% faster and sliding open to the camera will be 70% faster, even on older devices like the iPhone 5S.
