At the same time, Co-Chair Gayle DiBenedetto continues to help by supporting planning, logistics, and survivorship activities.

At the west end of the Relay track, the Garden of Hope will have Caregiver Pinwheels and the Torches of Hope.

On June 8 starting at 4 p.m., the Relay for Life 2018 events will kick-off at Minot State University. That special luncheon will take place at Newtown High School at 3 pm on Saturday, June 16.

The money raised funds cancer research, cancer prevention initiatives and personalized services for those diagnosed with the disease.

Mr Farrington told The Newtown Bee that he first became involved with Relay in 2004.

"I think about him every day and miss him every day", said McMurter. I Relay because I LOVE Purple Power!

"For years I thought about it".

What helped her through was the support of friends and family and the "beauty of having people around", she said.

It's to symbolize that cancer never sleeps, and cancer patients don't stop because they're exhausted, and for one night, neither do the teams. But it's not a battle she fights alone.

McAloon said final fundraising totals will not be official until August 31, the closing date for the year.

"Putting together an event like this is not easy; it takes about a year of planning", said McMurter. The fight against cancer is a movement in my family and is personal to me.

Now in its second year in a new format, the shortened event lasting six hours, from 6pm to midnight, used to run for 12 hours.

"I was mostly numb afterward", Kathy Lowe said.

"Our mission is to save lives faster", Castillo said.

"The love, the prayers, people we didn't even know were backing us".

"Not everyone is as lucky as I am not everyone has the great medical care".

Mr Farrington said it is important for the community to know that the Relay is not just another local event for a specific group of residents.

While it may be a hard road to walk, each step is bringing them closer each other, and to where they're meant to be.

Relay For Life of Northeast Colorado is taking the mound against its perennial rival - cancer - and hoping to sit its opponent down permanently.

Southington's 20th annual Relay for Life celebration rose over $85,000 last weekend for the American Cancer Society. "Not only will you be making a difference, but you will have fun doing it". Jackson and Kofoid said over the years, the trend had been for most Relay team members to leave for the night and then return for the closing ceremony in the morning, so it just made sense to shorten the event.

"Our event is so moving and incredible to be a part of", she added.

No matter where they each may be, survivor or caretaker, radiation or chemotherapy, Saturday night, they were in it together.
