Until it becomes clear just how many Indigenous people voted, it's hard to know just how engaged First Nations communities were in this election and if the Ford government will need to take their voices seriously. Notley went on to thank Kathleen Wynne for her more than 5 yrs of service as Premier of Ontario and offered congratulations to Andrea Horwath on leading the NDP to Official Opposition status. The party retained a pocket of three seats in the Ottawa area, Wynne's own Toronto riding and the neighbouring one, as well as a northern seat.

"We are proud that our measured and principled approach to modernization made voting even easier for many electors across the province while maintaining the integrity and security of our elections", said Ontario's chief electoral officer Greg Essensa.

Incoming Ontario premier Doug Ford promised a business-friendly government during the provincial election campaign, but now industry groups want the details about what that is going to look like.

"Tonight, the people of Ontario have spoken", Ford said in a speech celebrating his victory with supporters in Toronto, which was aired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). "The party with the taxpayers' money is over - it's done".

And he promises to work to win the support of those who did not vote for him.

But the dizzying pace of initiatives rolled out by Wynne's government might have also played a role, said de Clercy, citing a rise in the minimum wage and reforms in workplace legislation and education.

Wynne's low personal approval ratings helped drive the Liberals way down in the polls. Meanwhile, Liberals from the party's more pro-business wing - like Steven Del Duca - were defeated last night. Christine Elliott, a relative moderate and former deputy leader who narrowly lost the party's leadership to Ford earlier this year, won her seat in the Toronto suburbs.

Voter turnout was up significantly, to 58 per cent from about 51 per cent in the 2014 election.

The Tories secured 76 ridings, the NDP got 40 and the Liberals were reduced to seven seats in Thursday's vote.

Whether that happens depends on how much of a priority Indigenous communities and the issues important to them are in Ford's majority Progressive Conservative government.

The election has also marked a stunning collapse for the Liberals, who governed the province for the last 15 years.

Despite repeated promises, Ford never did release a detailed plan of where these cuts were going to be made or deliver a fully costed election platform. Ford passed away from a rare form of cancer in 2016.

Furthermore, Bricker estimated that the Liberal Party likely borrowed money to run this election campaign.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan is not fazed by the results of Thursday's election in Ontario. "The people of Ontario have asked us to hold Doug Ford accountable for every decision that he makes, and to continue putting forward our hopeful vision for the future of this great province". The bar is now eight seats.

Registered voters who have previously voted in or declared a party affiliation can vote only in that party's primary.
