"I would like to thank City Football Group and New York City FC for the opportunity to have coached this tremendous football club", Vieira said in a statement.

"I'm very happy to return to France, which I left at the age of 19 or 20", Vieira told a press conference.

There was no immediate word from New York City FC on Vieira's replacement.

Vieira replaces Lucien Favre at Nice.

Nice described the 1998 World Cup victor as a "monument of French football", whose dynamism and charisma had made him the obvious choice. "I think there's everything here that it takes to succeed".

The World Cup winner's experience in the league came at the beginning of his playing career from 1993 to 1996, with Cannes.

The former Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan star returns to France after a 23-year career overseas as a player and a manager.

"Domenec is someone we know really well and have great confidence in as both a person and as a coach".

While both teams were competing for the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, he and his wife attempted to take down her very competitive family.

Vieira played 107 times for France and was part of the squads that won the World Cup and Euro 2000.

"As for my honours with clubs or with Les Bleus, that will give me the confidence of the players for three months", he said.

"The important thing for me is to have a clear idea of what I want from players, a specific game scheme for them to express themselves, because the talent is there".

Torrent, former coach of Girona and assistant coach at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, comes to NY from sister club Manchester City, where he was an assistant to Pep Guardiola.

Announcing Vieira's departure on their official website, New York City were quick to thank the former World Cup and Premier League victor for his endeavours.

"I've come to know myself and my personality over the last three, four years on the coach's bench", Vieira said. "I've learned from all of my former coaches".

The ex-Manchester City, Inter Milan and Juventus midfielder was in his third season as head coach of New York City. Coaches are appointed to be sacked, goes the truism, but CFG have slowly been evolving a philosophy of coaching practice that's about the system beyond the force of a manager's personality - precisely so that personnel shake-ups such as Vieira's abrupt departure do not destabilize the ship.
