Rafael Nadal Insists Passing Roger Federer's 20 Slams Not On Agenda

Thiem arrived in Paris in hot form, having picked up more Tour-level wins than any player in 2018 and beaten Nadal in the Madrid Open quarter-finals last month, snapping Nadal's 21-match winning streak and his run of 50 straight sets won on clay.

ESPN's Nicolas Pereira breaks down Rafael Nadal's record 11th French Open title following his win in straight sets over Austria's Dominic Thiem.

Nadal struck 26 winners to Thiem's 34 yet made only 24 unforced errors to Thiem's 42, with "unforced errors" a relative term in Nadal Roland Garros matches.

But while he wants to win more, Nadal is not eyeing off Federer's mark of 20 championships.

But this will be the first time they've met in a Grand Slam final. But after, the Spaniard was imperious.

But in the third set, comfortably ahead by a break at 2-1, something unusual happened-Nadal's left hand cramped.

There was late anxiety for Nadal as the predicted thunderstorms loomed and he needed his left forearm massaged after beginning to suffer from cramp.

Nadal retained the momentum in the second set, breaking his opponent in the second game and holding out to edge closer to yet another title at Roland Garros.

If Thiem is, as he is widely regarded, the second best clay-court player in the world then he probably has a few more of these pummellings to look forward to at least until Nadal, 32, finally calls it a day.

"For me, the motivation to play here always is high, high as possible", said Nadal after breezing past Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in Friday's semi-finals in what was his 85th win in Paris against just two defeats.

"If you tell me seven, eight years ago that I will be here at 32 years old having this trophy with me again, I will tell you that is something nearly impossible, but here we are". Nadal also did not win the title in 2016, as he withdrew with an injury before his third-round match.

Nadal, however, averted danger with a pass after dragging Thiem in with a deft drop-shot. Not much more of a daunting task than doing so against Nadal at the French Open, where he is now 11-0 in finals and 86-2 overall.

But the best laid plans have been ground to earth by Nadal.

Nadal slides across the clay.

Two breaks later Nadal was in a familiar position, serving for the title, and when another Thiem forehand dropped long, his arms were raised in celebration, yet again. He pounded huge serves that topped 135 miles per hour - about 25 miles per hour better than Nadal's fastest - and translated into seven aces but also had five double faults.

However, it was not all smooth for Nadal, who missed four match points on his own serve before clinching victory when Thiem went long on the fifth.

Up in the stands, Nadal's uncle Toni, his former coach, was nervous, too, "because I thought maybe we can have a problem", he said.
