De Niro has been very outspoken about his dislike of Trump, famously referring to him as a "fucking idiot" and the "baby-in-chief" while introducing Meryl Streep at the National Board of Review Gala in January.

"I'm gonna say one thing: f-- Trump!" As they applauded and cheered, he continued, "It's no longer 'down with Trump.' It's 'f**k Trump'".

De Niro and Springsteen visited the White House in 2009 as both were recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors that year.

De Niro received a mixture of astonished gasps, laughter, and a standing ovation after his short speech, according to Deadline.

He said: "Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else and even more importantly in these perilous times, you rock the vote, always fighting for, in your own words, truth, transparency and integrity in government".

I can reiterate that in our last telephone conversation he expressed his concern about the threat of a new round of the arms race. The American leader has repeatedly said he wants to improve relationships with Moscow . "It wasn't us who left", he said.

De Niro said, "Do you have any idea how hard it is to get tickets for Bruce Springsteen's show on Broadway?"

"Boy, do we need that now".

Later, Tony Awards hosts John Groban and Sara Bareiles walked out wearing beards.

A noted liberal, he has been critical of President Trump, a Republican, at other show business events, but none with the high profile and reach of the Tony Awards, which salute performances in Broadway theater.

He has played Special Counsel Robert Mueller on "SNL" recently in skits mocking Trump (played by Alec Baldwin).
