"It's unbelievable. I said yesterday how much this place means to Ferrari and to have a race like we had today is unbelievable", said Vettel. Six cars can win races and you can't take anything for granted.

"I was quite happy with my first run in Q3 but I knew there was something more in the vehicle for the first part of the lap", Vettel continued.

In the final five laps, Hamilton pushed Ricciardo hard in the battle for fourth but the Australian - victor at Monaco last time out - just held on with the four-time world champion forced to relinquish his standings lead as he recorded his lowest placing of the season.

Vettel was well aware of the many Prancing Pony flags in the packed grandstands at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve as he kept the lead from pole position and coasted to victory on Sunday. This early stop allowed Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo to get ahead of him and Hamilton was never able to get close enough to pass the Australian late on.

"Like every grand prix there's not one person to dedicate it to", said Vettel. The error did not impact the race result, as leader Sebastian Vettel maintained racing speed for what should have been the final lap, though he did send a radio message back to Ferrari warning them that it had been displayed early.

The four-time champion German drove his Ferrari with near flawless aplomb to convert his 54th pole position into a triumphant afternoon ahead of Finn Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes and determined Dutchman Max Verstappen, who was third for Red Bull.

But Bottas and Hamilton may have been set back by the team's inability to get an updated engine ready in time for the race, while Ferrari and Red Bull both had new parts.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, the 2014 Canadian GP victor, is coming off a victory two weeks ago in Monaco. Bottas was first to blink on lap 37, Vettel following one lap later, both going to super-softs. "We need to keep applying the pressure, we didn't this weekend but I'm really going to make sure we come back stronger at the next race".

"Our auto wasn't good enough, so I won't get too upset".

Force India's Estaban Ocon took P9 while Sauber's young driver Charles LeClerc finished the top 10.

New Zealander Brendon Hartley will start in 12th for Toro Rosso.

It was also a short day for Stroll, a Montreal native who locked up with Hartley heading into Turn 5 on the first lap.

Stroll, 19, was in is second Canadian GP.

After 42 laps, sadly, Fernando Alonso's 300th Grand Prix weekend came to an end when, chasing 10th, he was called in to pit and retire.

This year marks the 55th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Parc Jean-Drapeau.
