The leaders of Canada and the United States are locked in an ugly, escalating public dispute over trade barriers, tariffs and how they think they world should resolve its problems.

The G7's other attendees fear a looming trade war over the Trump administration's move to impose steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico.

The situation only got messier from there, particularly in the leadup to, during and right after the G7 leaders' summit.

"My Fellow Americans, let's all #ThankCanada for things we love they've brought to our lives", he wrote, naming a number of people, including Drake, Leonard Cohen and comedy series SCTV.

President Trump went on with his advisers and attacked Prime minister Justin Trudeau by using words like "betrayal" and "stab".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, accused Trump of executing Putin's diplomatic and national security strategy, not America's.

"This week started with @realDonaldTrump boosting a Chinese company identified as a national security threat to the U.S. It ended with him standing up for Russian Federation and alienating our allies at the G7".

Responding to Trump's call for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the G7, turning it back into the G8, May said there had been "good reason" to expel Moscow after its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in 2014. We are like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing and that ends, and two, specific threats that it has to stop or we will stop trading with them, "them" being people that don't align their trade practices with USA interests, and warning that if you retaliate against steel and aluminum tariffs, you'll be making a mistake.

"The U.S. was trying to be disruptive to the G7", he said.

The tweetstorm is the latest fallout from a bad-tempered G7 summit in Quebec, Canada, in which the President found himself at odds with numerous leaders present, largely over his planned tariffs on a range of goods, including steel and aluminum.

For context, Trump slapped hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum products on his G7 allies before the summit. By the time I finish trade talks, that will change. For example, bilateral trade expanded by Dollars 11 billion a year ago to more than USD 125 billion, a new record.

Noting the USA imposition of tariffs was officially stated as a national security consideration, Freeland said: "We are very clear that Canada does not pose a national security threat to the United States". The others mocked the U.S. president, who withdrew USA endorsement to a G7 economic agreement on Sunday.

Following his departure from the summit Saturday evening, Trump tweeted that Trudeau was "Very dishonest & weak" during the summit, drawing criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, including Arizona Republican Sen. "According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with US (guess they were bragging and got caught!). Look forward to seeing them tomorrow". "Not fair to our farmers!" "I don't understand the obsession with trade relations with Canada", he said, given that Canada is the biggest single buyer of American goods and services in the world. We are going to have retaliatory tariffs. We're like the piggybank that everybody is robbing. "And no subsidies. I even said no tariffs", he said.
