Rodman went on to say that he took so much criticism from a controversial 2014 trip to the Hermit Kingdom, that he gets weepy even thinking about it. Rodman sang "Happy Birthday" at the time to Kim and seemed unaware of that nation's very bad human rights record. And I believed in North Korea, but I couldn't even go home. I had to hide out for 30 days. I just kept going back.

"(Kim) is trying to change his people and his culture for a little bit, and I think Donald Trump did a great job at keeping his composure and understand that Kim Jong Un wants to have trust in America", Rodman told reporters on Tuesday. I never had no one to hear me.

The eccentric former athlete and reality TV star was referring to his trips to North Korea in 2013 and 2017.

"And some of the things I said when I was under the influence back then that took it in the wrong context".

"It's a great day".

Rodman said he was "brushed off" when he tried to approach former US President Barack Obama about relations with North Korea.

"Obama didn't give me the time of day", Rodman said. "If Trump can pull this off, more power to him".

In an emotional interaction with CNN's Chris Cuomo, Rodman revealed he had received a call from the White House prior to the summit in Singapore.

Trump called Kim a "talented man" and that "talks went better than expected".

"It's awesome, it's unbelievable", Rodman said. "He thanks you a lot.' And that means a lot".

He added that he suspected he "somewhat had something to do with this North Korean situation". "We don't need a miracle, but we need the doors to be open so we can start fresh".

"[He should] let Kim Jong-un see him really emotional. It ain't gotta be about war, it ain't gotta be about hatred or what happen in the future or the past", he told CNN.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman openly cried on television in a weird meltdown over the US-North Korea summit.

"This guy wants to be around the world". "He wants to come to America and enjoy his life". He wants to enjoy his life. (CNN) Rodman said dictator Kim Jong-Un was a "big kid" who wanted to see the world.

The two struck up an unlikely friendship over their shared love of basketball.

Rodman says he's good mates with Trump, appearing on the former reality star's show Celebrity Apprentice in 2009 (he was sacked for spelling Melania's name wrong).

He was spotted by Reuters on Tuesday sitting by the pool and smoking a cigar at a hotel just over 200 meters from another hotel where Kim and the North Korean delegation are staying.

Rodman spoke from Singapore, where he had travelled to play his part in the summit between the two nations.

While Rodman won't be part of the official summit, his presence on the sidelines looks to cap off a freakish personal success story of sorts.

Rodman's trip is being sponsored by PotCoin, a digital currency used in the legal cannabis business.
