Microsoft acquires a whole bunch of game studios

Nearly three years after the release of Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft unveiled an announcement trailer for a new Halo game called Halo Infinite at Xbox's E3 briefing on Sunday afternoon.

Microsoft has acquired four gaming studios as it looks to ramp up the number of exclusive titles on Xbox. It is going to be the first mainline Halo title starring Master Chief since 2015's Halo 5. The E3 demo showcases some of the exciting potential of this technology - everything you see is running in-engine.

Financial details of the acquisitions of Playground Games, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Compulsion Games were not disclosed.

Spencer is far from the only one talking about streaming: Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that streamed games will replace consoles some time after the next console generation, and EA has announced its own cloud streaming service.

Earlier this morning, the tweeter-in-chief expressed his elation about being in Singapore and feeling "excitement in the air". Whether it can bring stability to the Korean peninsula is another matter. "I thought I was doing a charity event", he said.

Though Microsoft doesn't have the data to back this up, Spencer asserts that it's possible for games on Game Pass to actually sell more copies overall despite the fact that they're available with a Game Pass subscription.

It's been a long time since we've received a proper new Battletoads game. The knock-on effect from that though is that not only is there a lack of interest in Xbox in Japan, but western players who enjoy Japanese games have no reason to pick up an Xbox One. The reveal trailer for the game shows off incredible visuals including wide open vistas, varying ecosystems, and alien creatures. However, the multiplayer part of the game will purportedly release in 2020, which is a year later. Microsoft already supports in-home game streaming from Xbox One consoles to Windows 10 PCs.

Microsoft officials said the company is building a new Santa Monica, Calif. -based studio which it's calling "The Initiative".

"We commit the full breadth of resources at Microsoft to deliver on the future of play".
