The key objective for the U.S. will be to successfully negotiate the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The air of uncertainty was confirmed by Trump himself. "And it's all within the budget that the prime minister has specified, anyway".

"I told them today, take your time".

Details were not shared about how the discussions have progressed so far and Trump and Kim have yet to meet face-to-face.

The two leaders are at the site, with Kim arriving at 8:55 p.m., and Trump showing up five minutes later.

Trump's early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days. He described it as a "get to know you plus" meeting.

"I think things could work out very nicely", Trump said in a Tuesday meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Cheering crowds greeted Kim during his stroll, and cameras from North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency documented his every move.

The MFA also said Lee will meet President Trump separately on Monday. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

It was a striking about-face from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged US dotard".

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation.

The White House said Trump will leave Singapore 15 hours ahead of schedule, flying back to Washington on Tuesday night instead of Wednesday morning. One dispatch by the Korean Central News Agency said North Korea and the USA would exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing new relations, building a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism", achieving denuclearization and "other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".

It is believed that Trump and Kim will begin with a two-hour one-on-one session with translators, before an expanded meeting that includes advisers. "In light of how many flimsy agreements the United States has made in previous years, this President will ensure that no potential agreement will fail to adequately address the North Korean threat". Pyongyang has advocated for decades for a peace treaty to formally end the Korean War, rather than the armistice that has been in place for more than 60 years.

Since the first USA atomic test in the desert of New Mexico on July 16, 1945 eight countries have conducted an estimated 2,056 nuclear test explosions, mostly in the late 1950's and early 1960's - the darkest days of the Cold War, according to data from the Arms Control Association.
