Administrator Scott Pruitt spent part of a trip in Kansas at an ethanol production facility.

Pruitt was also under fire this week by a conservative nonprofit group from Iowa, which created a 30-second television ad this week and said "for the good of the country, Pruitt must go".

"Two of these companies that they handed waivers to made over a billion dollars past year", farmer David Fremark said.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt testifies before a Senate Appropriations Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee hearing on the proposed budget estimates and justification for FY2019 for the Environmental Protection Agency on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., May 16, 2018.

Ingraham's call for Pruitt to be replaced as EPA chief also marked one of the first times a key member of the conservative press has broken publicly from supporting him, even amid the scandals surrounding him.

Many farmers who spoke to Pruitt said they felt the waiver increase was hurting their farms and their income, the Mitchell Daily Republic reported.

"It's not a decision the EPA makes in isolation". "I have taken the position that if that doesn't stop, I am going to ... be in a position where I am going to be forced to say 'Scott you are not doing your job.' ..." "If you go back through time with respect to the applications, when RIN prices have gone up. applications have gone up".

Several farmers were not satisfied with this explanation, and one suggested that if the formulas used by the DOE were hurting farmers, maybe those formulas should be revisited.

About 200 people rallied in Sioux Falls on Wednesday, urging Pruitt to support federal ethanol mandates, the Argus Leader reported.

"A spike? That's more than a spike".

When asked whether EPA has the authority to repeal the finding, Pruitt said Congress has never acted on the issue or spoken on it. Other topics included the commitment to cooperative federalism, reforms to the EPA's Regional Haze Program and permitting improvements.

But, the ethanol industry has seen other perceived attacks, including hardship waivers under the Renewable Fuel Standard account for an estimated demand loss of 1.56 billion gallons, according to the Renewable Fuels Association.
