Apple has quietly closed a loophole that allowed third-party apps to potentially gather an iPhone user's contacts and sell on the data, according to Bloomberg.

The information contained in Contacts can be substantial. However, it is exactly this tactic that also got Facebook into such trouble this year.

Users must already opt in to sharing Contacts information with app developers, but now Apple has placed more restrictions on what developers can do with that information after they obtain it. This included details about the company's limits on tracking of internet browsing.

For those who fail to do all this and are caught, Apple threatens expulsion of the app from the App Store and of the developer from the Apple Developer Program.

"The address book is the Wild West of data, " one mobile developer said.

You can ensure that your child doesn't download any apps at all by going to the Restrictions menu and changing the "Installing Apps" slider to off (from green to white). It is thanks to that that the company has been able to create a profitable ecosystem for itself. The biggest deal to me was that this release focuses primarily on performance, which is expected to double the speed of common tasks such as launching apps or summoning the keyboard.

Apple has criticised the social network for that lapse and other missteps, while announcing new privacy updates to boost its reputation for safeguarding user data.
