Former Oregon player Leiato killed in auto crash

According to the Guard, Leiato's body was found about five hours after the crash, and police believe the driver, Pedro Chavarin Jr., lied about having no passengers in the auto. Leiato was the passenger while Pedro Chavarin Jr., 22, was the driver. Police first responded to the area just after 2:30 a.m. Friday in response to a single-vehicle rollover crash near the intersection. Boulevard and Kinsrow Avenue, in which the vehicle, a 2014 Kia sedan crashed and rolled off the road into some heavy brush.

Though the investigation isn't over, police say the deceased person was likely a passenger in the vehicle and not a pedestrian who got hit.

'Heart and prayers are with the Leiato family right now as well as the Oregon Football Family after hearing of the loss of Fotu Leiato.

He was expected to compete for a starting position at outside linebacker before his release. He played primarily on special teams as a true freshman, eventually earning time at safety and then linebacker last season as a junior, seeing action in all 13 games. "He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him". A January arrest on a misdemeanor trespassing charge was followed by separate theft, criminal trespassing and criminal charges in April. Leiato had 14 tackles in 2017.
