Muslims Around the World Celebrate Eid al-Fitr 2018

EDMONTON-As Muslims around the world celebrate the end of Ramadan, youth leaders at Edmonton's Al Rashid Mosque have added a modern twist on the age-old holiday.

Fatima Coovadia of the Saskatoon Human Rights Commission remembered when the entire Muslim congregation could fit into the mosque on Copland Crescent for Eid in 2002.

Muslims celebrated by waking up early and putting on their traditional clothing, depending on their culture, or something new they bought to wear for the day.

Oshana Yusuf, a 77-year old Christian resident of Baze began to visit his Muslim neighbors' homes on Friday, the first day of the three-day celebration, along with his family.

"Here, you have to book your time off work, and if you can't book your time off work, you're working during Eid", said Younes, 23. Traditionally, chicken or mutton biryani and sweet dish sheer kurma are made for this festival. Keeping roja has health benefits too, says Nadwi.
