Germany ended up last in Group F while Sweden and Mexico advanced to the round of 16.

However, they once again flattered deceive against South Korea in Kazan and can have few complaints about their early exit as Young-Gwon Kim and Heung-Min Son both scored in stoppage time.

It is the first time the four-time winners have ever failed to make it through the group stage. "We were really disappointed, that's why a lot of us cried".

The Germans face South Korea in the World Cup on Wednesday afternoon in Russian Federation, which will see RB Leipzig talisman Werner come up against 25-year-old Son for a place in the last 16.

South Korea went into the match with no points from their opening two games after losing 1-0 to Sweden and 2-1 to Mexico.

Mexico supporters were tense as they watched their team fall behind against Sweden with their World Cup survival on the line, but erupted with joy despite the 3-0 deficit on the scoreboard after learning South Korea had taken the lead against Germany to send them through to the knockout round.

About 500 miles (800 kilometres) to the east, in Yekaterinburg, Sweden thumped former group leaders Mexico 3-0, leaving Mexican fans anxiously focusing on events in Kazan.

South Korea took a 93rd minute lead when Kim found the roof of the net from two yards out.

It means Sweden progress at the top team while Mexico go through as runners-up.

Here are the highlights from day 14 at the World Cup. "We were convinced once the tournament started we would be able to play well but it didn't happen".

Loew was appointed national team coach after the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when he was assistant to Juergen Klinsmann.

After missing out in the last World Cup as well as the European Championships due to injuries, the Borussia Dortmund superstar is relishing the chance of playing in his first major global tournament. "I couldn't imagine that we would lose to South Korea", he told Germany's ZDF television. They have far more quality than South Korea in their squad and should secure a comfortable victory in this one.

Joachim Low opted to drop Thomas Muller for the clash, handing a re-call to Arsenal's Mesut Ozil while Jerome Boateng was suspended for the clash.

Germany is out of the World Cup, the fourth defending champion in the last five tournaments to be eliminated during the group stages.

Four minutes later German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was tackled as he roamed deep into South Korea's half, with a long ball giving Son Heung-Min the chance to slot home into an empty net from close range.

Repeat it: Germany are out of the 2018 World Cup. When they do get into the final third they're final ball has been hopeless. And it was South Korea who had the first unsafe opportunity of the match in the 19th minute.
