Media Association Jamaica (MAJ) is denouncing yesterday's attack on the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, US, in which five employees were killed.

In 2012, a judge dismissed the lawsuit on the basis that "there is absolutely not one piece of evidence or an assertion by you that the statement [in the article] was false".

A gunman who blasted his way through a newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, with a shotgun, killing at least five people in one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in USA history, was in custody on Friday pending charges, authorities said.

"This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief", he said before a speech to celebrate the tax overhaul law.

"At one point a few years ago the paper I edited had the record of being the most shot-at paper in Mexico (five times)", said Javier Garza, a journalist in northern Mexico, safety advisor for the World Association of Newspapers and former editorial director of El Siglo de Torreón, in an email to Poynter.

He said journalists, like all Americans, should be free of fear of being violently attacked while doing their jobs.

The Capital Gazette is a local daily newspaper and website owned by the Baltimore Sun Media Group. The suspect has been apprehended by police and taken into custody.

Reporter Selene San Felice told CNN she was at her desk and ran after hearing shots, but wasn't able to open the back door. The victims were identified Thursday night as Wendi Winters, Rebecca Smith, Robert Hiaason, Gerald Fischman and John McNamara. "Mr. Ramos then, as I told the judge, entered into the front door and worked his way through the office where he was shooting victims as he walked through the offices", Adams said. County police said reports of the suspect having mutilated his fingertips were not correct.

"These guys, they don't make a lot of money".

The New York Police Department immediately deployed counterterrorism teams to news organizations around the city in a move police said was prompted not by any specific threat but was instead done as a precaution. In addition to this, the woman who was harassed by Ramos told WBAL TV that she had warned police he would "be young next mass shooter".

He is reported to have stopped firing when the police came in and hid.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials in Baltimore and NY have deployed police officers to major media outlets as a precaution, authorities said. They include one of the oldest newspapers in the United States, The Gazette, which traces its origins back to 1727.
