After much back and forth with what sound like aides, he eventually gets a call back from someone who sounds like Mr Trump, who says he is travelling back from a rally in North Dakota.

Melendez, who has worked with Howard Stern and Jay Leno, said that he spoke with Trump on numerous occasions when he was a private citizen.

The fake Menendez, real Melendez, asks the very-real President Trump about family separation and Supreme Court nominees.

As far as Trump knew, he was taking a call from Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., who seemed to have an urgent legislative matter he wanted to raise.

"You went through a tough, tough situation and I don't think a very fair situation, but congratulations."

When the White House made inquiries with Mr Menendez's office about the conversation Mr Trump thought he had with him on Thursday, the senator's staff were befuddled, U.S. media report.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. I'm exhausted of the problem.

Kushner is a senior adviser for President Trump, tasked with working on Middle East peace, negotiations with Mexico, government technology reform, and criminal justice reform.

There is only speculation into how the call apparently made it all the way to the president. But Melendez was plainly shocked at the president's willingness to take his call in this case.

US representative from Wisconsin proposes dismantling of ICE
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, which critics say has treated some would-be immigrants cruelly and unfairly. But the family separation policy has been a watershed for attracting a broader spectrum of demonstrators, she said.

"All they had to ask me is what party affiliation is Sen".

Lo and bloody behold, the White House call him back to verify his phone number and question why he has a Californian area code when "Sean Moore" is assistant to a New Jersey senator.

Melendez said this was because he was on holiday and subsequently received a call from Mr Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner before the call from Mr Trump.

In the call, among other things, the voice that allegedly belongs to Trump (and does sound an bad lot like him) says he hopes to have the new SCOTUS pick announced in the next 12-14 days.

"What could I tell them that you're going to do in moving forward?" Menendez has put out a statement saying he would welcome the opportunity to talk to President Trump, but Trump has sabotaged any attempt to have a real immigration bill. He said on his podcast that he had spoken to Trump many times as himself, and called him from his personal phone. "We have to have security at the border - we have to have that".

Melendez then turned the conversation to the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, and asked if Mr Trump would choose a moderate or conservative as his replacement.

"I'll probably make it over the next couple of weeks".

The prank did not become public until Thursday afternoon, after Melendez posted the news on Twitter.
