'Families Belong Together' Marches Protest Trump Immigration Policies Nationwide

Two weeks ago, after already separating about 2,500 migrant children from their parents at the southern US border, President Trump caved to public pressure and stopped the widely condemned practice, announcing that revised version of his administration's "zero tolerance" policy would be to detain migrant families together instead.

Rita Montoya, 36, a Washington lawyer, was born in California but has Mexican origins and arrived at the protest with her two sons, aged two and four.

"I'm really happy people are now empathizing and going out on the streets for immigrants", Valdez said. About 50,000 attendees are expected in Washington, D.C., alone, where protesters will rally at Lafayette Square in front of the White House and march on the Department of Justice.

Dozens of activist organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, MoveOn and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, came together to organize the protests. As crowds mobilize across the country, they are joined by politicians and celebrities alike who condemn the actions of the administration and are calling to abolish ICE.

But Trump on Saturday defended the controversial agency, tweeting it is "one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups of men and women that I have ever seen".

"To the great and fearless men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit", Trump tweeted.

A 34-year-old protestor in Washington D.C., Jose Flores said that his father entered the United States illegally from Guatemala over three decades ago.

Valdez is an immigrant, and was undocumented for most of her life.

"We're children of immigrants", she said.

Immigration attorney Linda Rivas said groups have met with U.S. authorities, congressional representatives, and other leaders to discuss an escalating immigration crackdown that they say began decades ago.

In the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez, about 50 activists marched through downtown and travelled on to an global bridge, holding banners against the border wall Trump wants to build and militarization of the areas alongside it.

Saturday's "Rally against Family Separation" began with 11 a.m. with speeches at City Hall.

Trump agreed to rescind the separation part of the policy, but opponents say the administration has no plan for the speedy reunification of those families.
