Scorching temps, humidity lead to heat wave

Excessive heat warnings, watches and advisories have been issued for much of the Midwest and most of the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and Hartford, Connecticut.

Although actual temperatures aren't supposed to hit the triple digits - again (remember Memorial Day?) - the Weather Service said peak heat indexes will be in the 100- to 110-degree range.

The combination of heat and humidity will lead to an increased risk of heat-related stress and illness.

A heat wave is coming to the region this weekend, with sunny weather and temperatures in the 90s expected to linger through most of next week.

Los Angeles, under the influence of a cool Pacific Ocean, is expected to reach only 78 on Independence Day, but the pain will come eventually, according to the National Weather Service.

When dealing with a heat wave, experts recommend what might seem obvious, but is still important to remember: Stay hydrated, even if you're not thirsty. Temperatures will be slightly cooler on Sunday, but that is a relative term.

Philadelphia, which hit 92 degrees on Sunday with a heat index of 105, similarly sounded the alarm to its residents and visitors about the risky heat.

"Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke", the NWS advised.

HEAT CRAMPS: Painful spasms usually in the muscles of legs and abdomen with heavy sweating.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency and warrants calling 911, according to officials.

- Wear clothing that is lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting. Also, make sure that any outside activity is not too taxing and to take frequent breaks in the shade or air condition if being outside is necessary.
