West Nile Virus Activity Detected in Mosquitoes in Northern Indiana

Mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in Tulsa County, leading to increased warnings in Oklahoma.

The mosquitoes were collected off North Spring Court, near Campbell and Jupiter roads, according to Garland health officials.

CT and MA reported finding West Nile virus in mosquito samples this week.

The first human case of West Nile virus in the metro area for the 2018 season was confirmed Friday by the New York City Health Department.

"We'll continue to closely monitor mosquitoes for early virus amplification" said Dr. Theodore Andreadis, Director of the CAES.

Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol to clothes and exposed skin.

Mosquitoes can be more than pesky insects.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water often found around homes.

Health officials in OH and Washington are urging people to protect themselves against mosquitoes after insects in these states tested positive for the West Nile virus.

When practical, wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, shoes, socks and hats outside, especially in wooded areas. We have known that West Nile virus is in our area for many years.

Other patients infected with the virus may experience milder symptoms such as headache, fever and rash.

Be careful using repellent on the hands of children as it may irritate the eyes and mouth.

City officials request residents remove or chemically treat standing water with larvicide in and around their properties, including catch basins and drains.

As of June 27, the ISDH released a warning to locals in Elkhart and Carroll County (link goes to the ISDH's live monitoring of the virus) that the virus has been detected in mosquitoes in the area.

Avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn, peak mosquito biting times, if possible. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes. People over the age of 50 are reportedly more likely to develop serious symptoms of West Nile if they do get sick.
